What the Bible has to say about Abortion

I've had many people ask for my notes in reference to this past Sundays talk. The Message Series is entitled, "The Moral Collapse of Teenage America" and throughout this series, I've touched on many subtopics that I believe are the cause of the collapse we're experiencing in our country. We've taken a look at what the Bible has to say about Premarital and Extramarital Affairs, Alcohol, Homosexuality and the latest, Abortion.

Here are some of the key verses and statistics that were mentioned in this weeks talk:

Jeremiah 1:5
God says, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated (set you apart) you.”

In America tomorrow…4,000 babies will be sacrificed to abortion. Before this hour is complete…183 babies will be killed by a legal abortion! Before this year is over…1 million, 600 thousand babies will be killed. In fact…30% of all babies conceived in this country are killed fore they even see the light of day!

I've often wondered what God has to say to the physician who aborts babies for a living?

Deuteronomy 27:25 says,
“Cursed is the man who accepts a bribe to kill an innocent person.”

There’s all kinds of confusion on the topic of abortion today, and it all begins with one question… "When does human life begin?" Let's see what the Bible says...

Genesis 1:26-28
“The God said, “Let US make man in Our own image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. And God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. And God blessed them; and God said to them, Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it, and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

“God created man in his own image” …now…what does that mean when the Bible says that we’re created in “his own image?”

Question? Does God have a body? NO! The Bible says, “God is Spirit”…John 4:24, “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” That means when the Bible says we’ve been made in the “Image of God” …then it’s a reference not to our bodies, but to our personality…soul…and spirit.

Genesis 2:7 says, “Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.”

“Of the dust of the ground”…did you know that the exact elements of the soil are found in your body? It’s true. That’s why when you die physically your body decays and becomes dust again. In fact, God said that it would happen.

Genesis 3:19, “In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for dust you are, and to dust you shall return.”

So, if we’re made in the image of God…referring not to our bodies, but our personality…our spirit and our soul…when do the two meet? When does our “image of God” and our body come together?

Answer…at the time of conception! At the first second we were created.

The Bible is clear…that which is inside a woman’s womb is human life! The Bible teaches that indeed a real person exists inside that mother’s womb. For it’s in the womb…that the “image of God” …our spirit and soul and personality is introduced to a body that is made of dust.

Psalms 139:13-16
“For You formed my inward parts; you covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are your works, and that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden from you. When I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance being yet unformed. And in your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them.”

When those chromosomes come together…life begins! The Bible tells us that every baby in the womb of their mothers are individuals that God loves!

Exodus 21:22-23
“If men fight, and hurt a woman with child, so that she gives birth prematurely, yet no harm follows, he shall surely be punished accordingly as the woman’s husband imposes on him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. But if any arm follows, then you shall give life for life.”

“Life for Life” …Don’t tell me that a baby inside their mother’s womb is not a human being…her Bible says that if inside the womb that baby is killed in the process of a fight…then the penalty is “life for life.” In other words…the death penalty was used when a baby’s life in the womb was destroyed!

Isaiah 44:24
“Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, and He who formed you from the womb: “I am the Lord, who makes all things…”

Jeremiah 1:5
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.”

When John the Baptist was in Elizabeth’s womb and Jesus was in Mary’s womb…they met. And the Bible says in Luke 1:41 somehow…John knew that he was in the presence of Jesus while in the womb.

Look at the verse again…Luke 1:41 says, “when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.”

That word “babe” [brephos] is a Greek word that literally means, “an unborn child…embryo…fetus.” In the Bible…the word that is used for “baby” is [brephos]…and brephos is used whether it is born or unborn. It’s simply called a baby!

Proverbs 6:17 says that God hates, “the hands that shed innocent blood.”

What is the course to stop abortion in this country? It begins with you. You have a responsibility to speak up. God’s given you a voice and you have an opportunity to help this moral collapse turn into a moral climb among American students today.

You have a circle of influence and your circle will grow as you get older. In your circle at school, begin speaking out clearly and without apology.

Isaiah 58:1 says, “Cry aloud, spare not, life up your voice like a trumpet and show my people their transgressions.”

Proverbs 31:8 says, “Open your mouth for the speechless.”
